CHEYNEY – Mansfield's
Chuck Harper and
Joe Bell scored a career-high 28 and 26 points respectively but it wouldn't be enough to overcome Cheyney's 33-of-39 performance at the free throw line as the Wolves snapped an eight-game losing-streak with a 92-84 PSAC East win Saturday afternoon at Cope Hall.
Mansfield missed its first five shots of the game and trailed 22-12 nine minutes into the contest before going on a 21-10 run, keyed by Bell and
Kevonte McClain who scored 16 of Mansfield's points over that span, taking a 33-32 lead on a
Kyle Bradley layup with four minutes remaining in the first half.
Bell scored Mansfield's first 10 points of the game and connected on 10-of-14 first half field goals to record 20 of his 26 points by halftime.
The Mountaineers trailed 42-40 at intermission but Cheyney nailed back-to-back 3-pointers by Brandon Baylor in the first 30 seconds of the second half to open a 48-40 advantage. The Wolves would extend their lead to 66-53 on a trey by Jason Sabb with 11 minutes to play.
Mansfield tried to rally, cutting the score to 78-71 on a layup by
Dominic Oliver with 2:28 remaining, but couldn't overcome Cheyney's free throw shooting that saw the Wolves connect on 22-24 free throws over the last seven and a half minutes of the game.
For the game, Mansfield outshot Cheyney from the floor connecting on 34-of-59 shots for a season-best 57.6% including 16-of-24 (66.7%) in the second half.
But Cheyney, which went 26-54 (48.1%) from the floor, connected on a remarkable 33-of-39 free throws (84.6%) to Mansfield's 10-14 (71.4%) performance from the charity stripe. The Wolves held a slight 30-28 rebounding advantage and turned the ball over just four times. Mansfield tuned the ball over a season-low nine times.
Harper scored 26 of his game and career high 28 points in the second half, hitting 9-of-10 shots from the floor. Bell finished the afternoon with a career-best 26 points connecting on 12-of-19 from the floor while also pulling down a team-high five rebounds. McClain added eight points and five rebounds.
Cheyney (3-12, 2-10 PSAC) matched Harper and Bell getting 28 points from Sabb and 26 from Baylor with Jerrod Johnson adding 18 points and nine rebounds. Anthony Juene came off the bench to score 17 points.
Mansfield, which has lost all eight road games this season, falls to 6-10 overall and 3-9 in conference play.
The Mountaineers host Kutztown this Wednesday in Decker Gymnasium.
