Bloomsburg holds off Mansfield 75-72 in final seconds
BLOOMSBURG – Mansfield's
Cory Henneghan's 3-pointer at the buzzer rimmed out as first-place Bloomsburg held on for a 75-72 win in a PSAC East contest at Nelson Field House Wednesday night.
Mansfield, which trailed 39-36 at halftime, was down 54-44 seven minutes into the second half before mounting a torrid 14-3 run, taking a 58-57 advantage on a pair of free throws by
Kyle Bradley with 8:44 to play.
Bloomsburg (13-3, 9-2 PSAC) came back, forging a 70-66 lead on a 3-pointer by Njoku Nnamdi with just over four minutes remaining.
But Mansfield wouldn't go away, cutting the lead to 71-70 on a pair of
Chuck Harper free throws with 1:47 left in regulation play.
Bloomsburg responded, getting a critical layup by Dontahe Jordan with one second remaining on the shot clock at the 1:12 mark to give the Huskies a 73-70 advantage.
On its next possession, Mansfield missed on a 3-pointer and follow up layup but a steal by Henneghan gave Mansfield life and Harper nailed a jumper to pull Mansfield to within a point at 73-72 with 11 seconds left in the game.
Jordan was fouled on the ensuing inbound play and hit both free throws to put Bloomsburg up 75-72 with 5.2 seconds to play. Mansfield was able to get off a 3-pointer in regulation but Henneghan's shot rolled off the rim ending the game.
Bloomsburg held a 44-27 rebounding advantage including a decisive 23-7 advantage on the offensive glass. The taller Huskies got 38 points in the paint.
Mansfield had four players score in double-figures led by Harper's 17 point, seven rebound performance.
Kyle Bradley scored 14 points and dished out seven assists while Henneghan scored 13 points and
Joe Bell 10.
Bloomsburg, which snapped an 8-game losing streak to Mansfield, was led by Jordan with a game-high 22 points. John Schwarz came off the bench to score 15 points with Trevon Johnson adding 12 points and Njoku 11.
Mansfield falls to 6-9 overall and 3-8 in PSAC play. The Mountaineers travel to Cheyney on Saturday.
