Rosie and Candelmo Throw Gems in Sweep Over East Stroudsburg

EAST STROUDSBURG – Eric Rosenberger threw a five-hit shutout and Glen Jenkins drove in the winning runs in the seventh inning in the opener while Joe Candelmo fired a complete-game with Jon Moser delivering the game-winning hit in the seventh inning of the nightcap to lead Mansfield to a 2-0, 2-1 sweep in a key PSAC East doubleheader at East Stroudsburg Sunday.

The games featured outstanding pitching performances from Mansfield's Rosenberger and East Stroudsburg ace Jeremy Gigliotti in the opener and the Mountaineers Candelmo and the Warriors sophomore Andy Noga in the nightcap.

All four pitchers went the distance combining for 24 strikeouts while issuing no walks over the course of the afternoon.

In the opener, Rosenberger was perfect through the first four innings before East Stroudsburg Brett Earnest singled to open the bottom of the fifth. ESU had runners on first and second in the inning with two outs before Rosenberger ended the threat by striking out Earnest Cain.

East Stroudsburg threatened again in the sixth when Ryan Guarino led off with a single and later advanced to third with two outs before Rosenberger got Eric Boyer to ground out to end the inning.

The teams went into the top of the seventh in a scoreless tie when Mansfield's Kevin Miller singled with one out and went to second on a single by Mitch Iseneker. Jon Moser flied out to center for the second out of the inning but Mansfield loaded the bases when Brian Milliman was hit by a pitch from Gigliotti.

Earnst singled to open the bottom of the seventh for East Stroudsburg but Rosenberger got Tim Spilatore to ground into a double play and C. Knott flied out to center to end the game.

Rosenberger threw his first shutout of the season, scattering four hits and striking out four to improve to 5-0 on the season. It was the first loss of the season in four decisions for Gigliotti who saw his PSAC record 27.2 scoreless inning streak come to an end with Jenkins double in the seventh.

Miller went 2-4 with a double while Jenkins was 1-3 with a double and two RBI's to lead the Mountaineer offense.

The nightcap proved to be equally as well pitched and suspenseful.

Both teams scored a run in the second inning with Mansfield getting its run when Jon Moser stole home as part of a double steal. East Stroudsburg answered in the bottom of the inning with Ernst leading off with a double and moving to third on a single by Spilatore. Chris Knott then lifted a sac fly to foul territory in right field to score Ernst.

One out later, Matt Bahnick singled to put runners on first and third with two outs before Candelmo stuck out Carey Zimmerman swing to end the threat and the inning.

Candelmo would rise to the challenge again in the fourth when Ernst led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Candelmo got Spilatore to strike out swinging before a fly out to center moved Ernest to third. Candelmo ended that threat by striking out Nico Delerme.

East Stroudsburg also had runner in scoring position with two outs in the fifth before Candelmo retired the side. In the bottom of the sixth, Candelmo struck out Ernst, who had hits in his first two at bats, looking and followed that by striking out Spilatore to end the inning.

With the score tied 1-1 going into the top of the seventh, Miller led off the inning with double for the Mountaineers and one out later, Moser ripped a double to score Miller.

Moser was thrown out at third on the play and Noga struck out Brian Milliman to end the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Candelmo struck out Nott to start the inning and got Deleme to pop up to short for the second out.

Matt Bahnick singled with two outs and advanced to second on a wild pitch before taking third on a passed ball before Candelmo got pinch hitter Eric Forth to ground out to third to end the game.

Candelmo had his best outing of the season allowing six hits over seven innings while striking out seven and walking none. Dylan Woodworth had two of Mansfield's five hits in the game with Moser and Miller both hitting doubles.

Noga suffered his first loss in five decisions scattering five hits over seven innings and striking out five. Ernest went 2-3 with a double.

The sweep extends Mansfield winning streak to four games giving the Mountaineers an overall record of 14-5 and 3-1 in the PSAC East.

East Stroudsburg, which entered the doubleheader ranked No. 11 in the nation in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Division II poll, falls to 17-6 and 3-3 in PSAC East play.

The two teams are scheduled to meet Monday at Mansfield's Shaute Field in a makeup doubleheader from Saturday.
