Ruch's Grand Slam Rallies Mansfield to Win in Opener at Bloom

BLOOMSBURG – Ernie Ruch belted a pinch-hit grand slam home run to lead Mansfield to an 11-4 win over Bloomsburg in the opening game of a PSAC East doubleheader Monday afternoon at Danny Litwhiler Field.

Bloomsburg scored seven runs in the first two innings of the night and went on to a 7-2 win in the nightcap to salvage a split.

In the opener, Mansfield scored on a wild pitch to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first but Bloomsburg got to Mansfield starter Eric Rosenberger for four runs, three of the unearned, in the bottom half of the inning.

Mansfield cut the lead to 4-2 when Mike Hartz doubled to lead off the second and later scored on a RBI single by Brian Milliman.

The Mountaineer closed to 4-3 with a run in the fourth on an RBI by Glen Jenkins.

sophomore Ernie Ruch, who was pinch hitting for Jenkins, to take a 9-4 lead. The Mountaineers got two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh on RBI's by Seth Tressler and Dan Chevalier.

Rosenberger allowed just four hits after the first inning, shutting out Bloomsburg the rest of the way and striking out six to improve to 6-1 on the season. Milliman went 3-3 with an RBI while Hartz was 2-4 with two doubles. Tressler also had two hits and drove in a run.

Matt Kline took the loss of Bloomsburg after relieving starter Kyle Hunter in the sixth.

The win snapped a seven-game losing streak for Mansfield, the longest in head coach Harry Hillson's 25-year tenure.

In the nightcap, Bloomsburg got to Mansfield starter Joel Worthington for seven runs on six hits in the first two innings and Huskies starter Mike Rossetti threw a complete game five-hitter in a 7-2 win.
Mansfield scored in the third on an RBI single by Kevin Miller and in the seventh on a pinch-hit solo home run by Levi Weiskopff.

Marc Baker relieved Worthington in the second inning and allowed two hits over 2.2 innings before being relieved by Mike Martin in the fifth and Craig Cyerman in the sixth.

Joey Ianiero led the Bloomsburg offense going 3-3 with two doubles and two RBI. Vince Smarrelli was also 3-3 with three RBI.

Mansfield goes to 17-14 overall and 6-10 in the PSAC East.

The Mountaineers are scheduled to host West Chester in a doubleheader on Tuesday at Shaute Field.
