Mounties drop doubleheader to Millersville

MANSFIELD – Mansfield dropped a PSAC East doubleheader to Millersville in a battle between nationally ranked programs Thursday afternoon.
Mansfield, ranked No. 26 in the latest Collegiate Baseball poll, lost the first game 15-6 and Millersville, tied for No. 20 in the same poll, scored five runs in the top of the seventh to win the nightcap 10-4.
In the opener, Millersville got to Mansfield starter
Marc Baker early in the game scoring four runs in the first inning and adding two more in the second.
Millersville starter Tad Barton didn't allow a hit until Mansfield's
Dan Chevalier led off the fifth inning with a single. Mansfield scored four of its five runs in the seventh inning with two of them coming off a single by
Joel Worthington and another on a RBI single by
Kevin Miller. Mansfield committed four errors in the game.
Millersville was led by Carlos Medina who went 3-4 with a home run and three RBI and Derek Kline who was 3-5 with two RBI. Barton went the distance to improve to 4-0 on the season striking out five and walking none.
In the nightcap, Millersville got two runs in the top of the first off Mansfield starter Craig Cyerman but Mansfield tied the game in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run home run by
Kevin Miller over the right field fence.
Millersville scored two runs in the third on a wild pitch and run scoring double by Zach Stone.
Mansfield closed to 4-3 with a run in the bottom half of the inning on a single by
Mike Hartz. The Mountaineers had runners at second and third with two outs but Millersville shortstop Mike August went high and snagged a hard smash by
Dan Chevalier to end the inning.
Mansfield threatened again in the fourth when
Brian Milliman led off with a double but August again made an excellent play, this time behind the bag at second on a slow roller to throw out
Seth Tressler.
Millersville increased its lead to 5-3 with a solo run in the fifth before putting the game out of reach with five runs in the top of the seventh.
Miller went 2-3 with his first home run of the season and drove in three runs while Tressler went 2-4.
Millersville was led by Chad Edgar who went 3-4 and Zach Stone who was 2-4 with two RBI.
Mansfield falls to fourth place in the PSAC East with a 5-5 conference mark and 16-9 overall. Millersville is in first place in the PSAC East with a 12-4 mark and improved to 25-7 overall.
Mansfield travels to West Chester for a doubleheader Friday afternoon before returning home to host West Chester on Saturday and East Stroudsburg on Sunday.
