WINTER HAVEN, FL –
Joel Worthington threw a complete-game eight hitter in the nightcap and
Jon Moser drove in four runs to lead Mansfield to a 12-0, 6-2 split over Northwood University in a doubleheader in Winter Haven, FL Tuesday.
Mansfield had few highlights in the opener suffering its first loss after winning the first three games of the season.
Eric Conway started and took the loss after going two innings and giving up seven earned runs. He was relieved by
Ron Missal and
Aaric Ross.
Austin Rinard led Northwood at the plate going 3-5 with three RBI. Andrew Thompson went the distance on the mound scattering two hits and striking out three to take the win.
In the nightcap, each team scored a run in the first inning before the Mountaineers exploded for four runs with two-outs in the top of the second. Moser drove in the first three runs of the inning on a bases-loaded double and then took third on the throw. Moser scored when the next batter
Jon Taddeo singled him in.
Those would prove to be more than enough runs for Worthington who scattered eight hits over seven innings, striking out two and allowing just one earned run.
Mansfield (4-1) added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI single by
Kevin Miller.
Moser went 2-4 with two doubles and four RBI and also stole a base.
Seth Tressler and
Kevin Miller had two hits apiece.
Northwood (4-1) suffered its first loss of the season with Zac Zoellner (L, 0-1) started and took the loss after going four innings. Michael Good led the offense going 2-4 with a double.
Mansfield plays nationally-ranked Ashland in a single game on Wednesday.
