Winter Haven, FL – The Mountaineer Baseball team split a pair of games Friday afternoon in a match-up against a highly touted Wayne State University ball club. Pitchers Joe Candelmo and Andy Young each threw complete game efforts for Mansfield.

The Mansfield bats were cool for the opening three innings of the first game, but a big 4th inning by the Mountaineers would turn the ballgame around. A Seth Tressler single and Dylan Woodworth double put runners at second and third for Mansfield with senior captain Mike Hartz up to bat. Hartz drove in Tressler with a deep sacrifice fly and Brian Milliman's clutch RBI single brought in Woodworth to give Mansfield a 2-0 lead.

Candelmo allowed a single Wayne State run in the bottom of the inning, but shut down the Warriors for the rest of the game to hold on to a 2-1 victory.

Candelmo sat down five batters on strikeouts and only allowed 5 hits on the day. This marks the sophomore lefty's second straight complete game victory on the season.

The second game was dominated by great pitching from both sides. Mansfield's Andy Young allowed only four hits and K'd five batters while Wayne State's Brett Shankin allowed only two hits and recorded six strikeouts.

The game's only run came in the 3rd inning when an RBI single by Brad Guenther brought home Cameron Walker to give the Warriors the lead.

In the bottom of the 7th, Mitch Iseneker hit a solid two out single and Mike Strong pitch ran and stole a bag for the Mountaineers, but the rally fell short as Mansfield dropped a 1-0 decision with Wayne State.

Mansfield plays their last Florida game Saturday morning in a PSAC crossover match-up against Slippery Rock University at Southeastern University's baseball field in Lakeland. First pitch is set for 9:30.
