Chuck Harper and
Kyle Bradley each recorded double-doubles and Mansfield had five players score in double-figures to outlast Lock Haven 70-64 in a PSAC crossover contest Sunday afternoon in Decker Gymnasium.
“It wasn't easy but it was a win,” said head coach
Rich Miller. “I thought we played better defensively than we did yesterday and we put ourselves in scoring position but just didn't shoot the ball well – especially in the second half.”
Mansfield led for 33 of the 40 minutes of the game and never trailed after the first seven minutes but could also could not extend the lead to a comfortable margin.
The Mountaineers used a 10-2 run to take a 19-12 lead on a layup by Bradley a little over midway through the first half but Lock Haven would cut the lead to 19-18 with just over five minutes remaining in the half.
Mansfield then closed out the last three minutes with a 9-1 run to take a 34-23 lead into intermission.
Bradley keyed the Mountaineers efforts in the first half scoring 11 points and pulling down 8 rebounds over the first 20 minutes of the game.
Mansfield maintained the lead for the entire second half but the pesky Bald Eagles never made the game comfortable.
Lock Haven trailed 40-27 two minutes into the second half before slowly chipping away at the lead. The Bald Eagles used 12-2 run over the next 11 minutes to pulled to 42-39 on a pair of Armandi Marshall free throws and still trailed by just three points at 50-47 with eight minutes to go.
But Mansfield held Lock Haven scoreless over the next three minutes taking a 55-47 lead with six minutes to go and extended it to 69-58 on a pair of free throws by
Charles Becoats to effectively end the game.
Mansfield held a 45-31 rebounding margin in the game and made 24 free throws to the Bald Eagles 11.
Harper, a junior, was the game's leading scorer with 17 points and posted his first collegiate double-double with 10 rebounds. Bradley, a sophomore scored 12 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to also record his first-ever collegiate double.
Sophomore
Kevonte McClain had 14 points and connected on 8-10 free throws while
Josh Dupuy scored 12 points and
Charles Becoats 10.
Lock Haven (0-3, 0-2 PSAC) also had five players score in double-figures led by Andre Rivers with 15 points and Julian Bond with 13.
Mansfield improves to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in PSAC play. The Mountaineers are off for the remainder of November before traveling to California and Indiana on Dec. 3-4.
