MANSFIELD –
Derrison Anthony scored a game-high 20 points and four Mountaineers scored in double-figures as Mansfield held on for a 76-70 win over visiting East Stroudsburg in a key PSAC East game Wednesday night in Decker Gymnasium.
“That was a very good win in a very physical game,” said head coach
Rich Miller. “Both teams played hard all night and every possession was contested. We did the things we needed to do down the stretch against a very dangerous team.”
Mansfield slowly built a 36-31 halftime lead and held a 46-40 advantage 10 minutes into the second half before going on a 16-5 run over the next five minutes to go up 62-45 on a 3-pointer by
Lavail Owens with just over five minutes to play.
But East Stroudsburg, which earlier this year beat Mercyhurst after trailing by 11-points with less than a minute to play, staged a furious comeback attempt. The Warriors used a 12-2 run to cut the lead to 66-59 with 2:34 to go and trailed 74-68 with 31 seconds remaining before Mansfield managed to put the game away.
Mansfield held a distinct rebounding advantage pulling down 45 boards to East Stroudsburg's 31. Both teams shot 38% from the floor while combining to connect on 53-of-65 free throws in the game.
Anthony recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 14 rebounds along with his 20 points.
Yuseff Carr and
Tony Fannick added 15 points each with
Lavail Owens chipping in with 11 points. Freshman
Kyle Bradley scored just 3 points but pulled down a season-best 10 rebounds.
Mike Tobin led East Stroudsburg (9-6, 2-1 PSAC East) with 17 points while Duane Johnson added 16 points.
Mansfield improves to 10-5 overall and 2-1 in the PSAC East.
The Mountaineers travel to Shippensburg on Saturday.
