Miller gets 75th career victory as Mansfield cruises to season opening win over Lock Haven

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Miller gets 75th career victory as Mansfield cruises to season opening win over Lock Haven

Box Score

LOCK HAVEN – Derrison Anthony recorded a double-double with a game-high 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead Mansfield to a 68-43 win over Lock Haven in the season opener for both teams Friday evening at Thomas Fieldhouse.

“I think we played well defensively,” said head coach Rich Miller. “That's going to be important for us all year.”

“Just before we left the locker room we talked about to coming out in the second half and getting down the court before they could set up their zone defense. We got that 10-0 run that really broke open the game.”

Mansfield erased an early Lock Haven lead with a 17-4 run to take a 24-8 lead seven minutes into the game. The Mountaineers extended that lead to 36-22 at halftime with Anthony and newcomer Kurtis Levere each scoring nine points over the first 20 minutes.

Mansfield went out 10-0 over the first 3:30 of the second half to take a 46-22 lead.

Mansfield, which used reserve players for much of the second half, led 64-34 with just over four minutes remaining. Mansfield held a 48-32 rebounding advantage and shot 42% from the floor including 44% on three-point attempts.

Senior Yuseff Carr played just 14 minutes and scored five points to move into a tie for 21st on the all-time scoring list with Davy Russell (1959-62) with 1061 points.

The win was the 75th for Mansfield head coach Rich Miller who enters his sixth season at the helm of the Mountaineer program. He becomes the second fastest coach in Mansfield's 110-year basketball history to reach the 75 win milestone behind former head coach Ed Wilson who recorded his 75th win in his fifth season on his way to 300 career wins.

It marked the fifth straight season Mansfield has opened the season with a win and the ninth time in the past 10 years.

Mansfield host Penn State-Dubois in the Mountaineers home opener this Wednesday evening in Decker Gymnasium.
