WEST CHESTER, Pa. - The Mansfield Mountaineers men's basketball team fell on the road to nationally ranked No. 25 West Chester by a score of 84-76, on Saturday, Feb. 8.
All eight Mounties that checked into the game scored for Mansfield.
Ty Crespo lead the way with a game high 26 points.
The teams took jabs early trading buckets with neither team grabbing the edge. The Mounties (7-15, 4-12 PSAC East) had six separate scorers and found themselves down 19-16, halfway through the first half. Crespo had five of those points.
Nasir Brown tied the game up at 19-19 with eight minutes left in the half on a diving layup.
The Mountaineers and the Golden Rams continued to trade buckets to keep the game close highlighted by acrobatic driving layups from Brown and Crespo.
Jaydan Montgomery tied the game at 32-32 with a three-point basket from the right side.
The Golden Rams regained the lead heading into half with a momentum shifting three from with 31 seconds remaining. West Chester lead at the half by a score of 37-33.
The Mounties took the lead early in the second half opening with the first five points of the half with a layup from
Scott Woodring and a three-point basket from Crespo. The Mounties lead 38-37.
Crespo added six more including an and one layup that forced a West Chester timeout. Mansfield led 44-39 with 16:48 remaining.
Mounties held the lead until 12:18 remaining after the Rams put together their own 10-5 run. Tieing the score at 51-51 and forcing a Mansfield time out. Mansfield would fight back and retie the game on an emphatic ally-oop from Montgomery to
Sterling Scott.
A West Chester technical foul sent
Owen Chambers to the line where he was one of two cutting the lead to 69-67 with 4:32 remaining.
Chambers would be sent to the line for three made free throws to cut the lead back to 76-74 with two minutes remaining.
The Mountaineers were unable to claw back in the final minute and the Golden Rams get the victory 84-76.
