LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - The Mansfield men's basketball team (8-15, 5-12 PSAC East) traveled to Lock Haven on Wednesday (Feb. 12) afternoon to take on the Bald Eagles (12-11, 9-8 PSAC East) and won by a final score of 95-90.
Diarmid Stewart set a new career-high with 28 points and went a perfect 9-9 from the free throw line.
Owen Chambers added another 20 for the Mountaineers and grabbed seven rebounds.
Scott Woodring led the Mounties with nine rebounds and was the third Mountaineer to score 15+ (19) in the game.
Lock Haven jumped out to an early four-point lead at the first media timeout behind the hot shooting of Kevin Coleman who scored 11 of the team's first 13 points.
At the under-12 media timeout, Mansfield trailed by five as Woodring led the way for the Mounties, knocking down all three of his three-point attempts.
With 7:35 remaining in the half, The Haven held a six-point lead (31-25), shooting over 50% from the floor.
Lock Haven quickly extended their lead to 10 before the final media timeout of the half, leading 42-32 with 3:47 to go in the first.Â
Mansfield cut the deficit to within seven (46-39) going into halftime as Woodring paced the way with 12 points. Stweart added 10 for the Mounties and went 2-4 from three in the half.
The Mountaineers opened the second half on a 10-2 run to take their first lead since the opening minutes of the first half.
The Bald Eagles responded and once again led by six with 11:43 to go in the game.Â
A second 10-2 run of the half for the Mounties put them up 65-63 with 9:07 left following two made free throws from Nasir Brown.
After a Lock Haven three that cut the Mansfield lead down to three, Jaydan Montgomery answered with a three of his own to go back up six with under five to go.
Mansfield led 80-76 at the final media timeout of regulation as Stewart had a career-high 22 points.
Clinging to a four-point lead with under a minute to go, Stewart stepped to the line to add to his career day and keep the Mounties up by two possessions.
After Lock Haven converted a three-point play, Chambers was able to ice the game with 17 seconds to go after going 2-2 from the line.
