MANSFIELD, Pa. – In a Saturday (Feb. 1) Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division contest between the Mansfield Mountaineer women's basketball team (8-12, 4-10 PSAC East) and Kutztown, (13-10, 8-6 PSAC East) the Golden Bears defeated the Mounties in a 79-60 victory.Â
Katie Sheeler led the Mountaineers with 14 points, six rebounds, and four steals.
Danae Ellzy added 13 points in her performance and Kristen Fulford poured in eight points and two steals on the day.Â
Kutztown got out to an early lead with three straight baskets, taking an 11-6 lead.Â
Ellzy accounted for seven points in the quarter, with five of them coming early to help aid the Mounties as the lead was cut down 20-15 at the end of the first quarter.Â
The Mountaineers continued to fight back as the team attacked the paint early with Paris Anthony and Sheeler scoring two early baskets to make it a one-point game, 20-19.Â
With contributions from Sheeler, Anthony, and Fulford combining for six points, the Mounties were in a hard-fought scoring battle with the Golden Bears.Â
To end the first half, Kutztown went on 13-6 run to hold the 44-32 advantage.
As crucial turnovers impacted the flow of the game for the Mounties coming into the second half, Kutztown quickly capitalized and went on a 12-0 run to open the second half, leading 56-34.
Kenedy Stroup and Ellzy had strong performances in the third quarter, earning four points each to help the Mountaineers. Mansfield still trailed at the end of the third quarter by a score of 62-44.
Mansfield started the final quarter by creating easy points in the paint courtesy of Sheeler and Fulford, but Kutztown did not let go of their lead as the Golden Bears won this PSAC Eastern Division contest, 79-60.
