MANSFIELD, Pa. – Looking for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division victory, the Mansfield Mountaineer women's basketball team (8-11, 4-9 PSAC East) were bested East Stroudsburg (8-10, 5-7 PSAC East) in their 70-50 triumph on Saturday (Jan. 25).
Cydney Stanton led the Mounties with 13 points and accumulated four steals.
Danae Ellzy dropped 11 points in her return to the court and
Kristen Fulford knocked down ten points and reached four rebounds on the afternoon.
ESU sank the first five baskets of the afternoon to burst out to the early 12-2 lead.
Fulford was credited with the only field goals for the Mounties in the quarter, scoring six points to ignite the Mountaineer offense, but the Warriors held the 16-8 edge after the first ten minutes. Â
Stanton exploded for nine points in the first four minutes of the second quarter, sinking two three pointers to limit the Warrior damage to 22-17.Â
The host extinguished the potential spark of a lead change, scoring the final 11 points of the quarter to bolster their advantage to 33-17 at the halftime buzzer.
Shooting selection played a pivotal role in the third quarter, allowing for ESU to break away from the Mounties. With a 50% (10-20) field goal percentage in the quarter, the Warriors built a 49-21 difference, knocking down seven of the first eight baskets and ending the quarter with the 55-30 lead.Â
Mansfield begin the final quarter with a 16-6 run, including six points from Ellzy before East Stroudsburg finished out their Eastern Division victory with the 68-48 score.
