Mounties Nail Biter Falls Short Against West Chester

MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Mansfield Mountaineers Men's basketball team (6-12, 3-9 PSAC East) falls short against West Chester University (15-3, 10-1 PSAC East) on Wednesday (Jan. 22) evening by a final score of 80-78.


Sterling Scott paved the way with a Mansfield career high of 32 points.

Ty Crespo had a total of 13 points for the Mountaineers.
 
The first five minutes of play led to back and forth scoring for both teams with the Mounties ahead 10-7. 

Scott persevered adding to his collection of points with a dunk furthering the Mansfield lead 16-10. 

The Golden Rams went on an eight-point run to cut the score to 20-15. 

With 2:47 left, West Chester was able to take the lead for the first time since the opening minutes of the game.

After an increase in pace, the Golden Rams drove forward into the halftime with a close score of 36-32.

Five minutes into the second half, West Chester found a run and doubled their lead, making the score 50-42.

Following four successful points, Scott shortened the lead to only five points at with 10:59 remaining..

As the score was nose to nose, free throws made by Crespo allowed it to become a one possession game for the Mounties at 68-65.

Eight consecutive points for Scott in the final three minutes allowed Mansfield to take a two-point lead with a score of 78-76.

A technical foul on Lleyton Fried tied the score 78-78, leaving the Golden Rams with the ball in the final eight second.

West Chester maintained possession from the tech and a Mansfield foul with 0.08 seconds left gave the Golden Rams two shots that ended the nail-biting game with a WCU 80-78 victory.
