MANSFIELD, Pa. - The Mountaineer men's basketball team (6-11, 3-8 PSAC East) defeated the Lock Haven Bald Eagles (7-9, 4-6 PSAC East) 81-77 on Saturday (Jan. 18) afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division match-up.
Owen Chambers scored a career-high 26 points knocking down five threes and grabbing seven rebounds.
Ty Crespo added 16 points and led the Mounties on the defensive end with five steals.
Mansfield jumped out to an early 13-6 lead in the first four minutes forcing a Lock Haven timeout as Chambers scored eight quick points for the Mounties.
Out of the timeout, the Bald Eagles utilized an 11-2 run to take a two-point lead into the under-12 media break.
With 2:32 left to go in the first half, the Mountaineers held a 35-26 lead thanks to a 14-4 run that was capped by a Brown three-point basket.
Before the half Mansfield extended their advantage to 14 points following a Chambers three with just two seconds left in the first.
At the break, the Mountaineers led 44-30 as Chambers scored a team-high 19 first-half points, as well as grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Brown scored another eight points as the Mounties controlled the final 10 minutes of the first half.
Mansfield still led by 10 at the under 16-minute timeout of the second half but Lock Haven was looking to extend on their 6-0 run coming out of the break.
The Mounties responded by stretching their lead back to 14 at the 11:30 mark and held that lead into the next media break.
The Bald Eagles went on a 10-2 run and got the deficit to within four with 6:53 to play in regulation.
Mansfield built the lead back to nine (79-70) after a Sterling Scott dunk with just two minutes to go.
Lock Haven cut the Mountaineer lead to two with 41 seconds to go, after a miss for the Mounties, Crespo got his fifth steal of the game and went 2-2 from the free throw line to ice the game for Mansfield.
