KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Serving as their only Monday matchup of the season, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division battle between the Mansfield Mountaineer women's basketball team (7-8, 3-6 PSAC East) and the host Kutztown (7-10, 3-6 PSAC East) saw the Golden Bears edge out the Mounties with a 75-62 victory.
Katie Sheeler led the way for Mansfield with 17 points and dishing out five assists.Â
Sarah Hortin posted her fifth double digit game of the season with 12 and eight rebounds Cydney Stanton rounded out the Mounties with ten points.Â
After a quiet opening 5-5 start, Kutztown splashed four of the next five baskets in part of a 13-3 to break out to an 18-8 lead. The Golden Bears finished the first quarter with a buzzer beater jumper to hold the 20-11 advantage.
To begin the second quarter, the Mounties found their rhythm and scored the first five buckets, including two three pointers from Kenedy Stroup, with Mansfield gaining their first lead at 23-21.Â
Four lead changes followed as the Golden Bears knocked down a three with 33 seconds remaining in the half to hold the 29-27 edge before heading to the locker rooms, with six lead changes in the final minutes. Hortin scored the final six points for the Mountaineers in the quarter.Â
A different tempo began the third quarter as the two teams combined for 21 points over the first five minutes, with Kutztown still in control with the slim 39-38 lead.Â
After the media timeout, the Golden Bears dropped nine of the next 11 points to jump out to the 48-40 advantage and used the momentum to open up their lead, holding a 56-45 edge before the final quarter.Â
In a chance to spark the Mountie offense, Sheeler sank the first five points before Paris Anthony slipped a three pointer to cut the Golden Bear lead to 60-53.Â
Kutztown stopped a chance of a comeback and used their offensive keys to remain in control in the final minutes of the fourth quarter to come out with the 75-62Â victory.Â
