KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The Mansfield men's basketball team (5-10, 2-7 PSAC East) lost on the road Monday (Jan. 13) night to the Kutztown Golden Bears (5-10, 2-7 PSAC East) by a final score of 68-62.
Julian Wilson and Owen Chambers led the Mounties in scoring, each totaling 13 points on the night.
Sterling Scott followed closely, scoring 12 points and adding six rebounds.
Scott Woodring added 7 points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
The Mountaineers held a 14-13 lead at the first media timeout led by a quick five points each from Chambers and Wilson.
Kutztown responded with a 24-12 run over the next 6 plus minutes and took a 35-26 lead into the under-eight media timeout.
With 3:19 remaining in the first half, the Mounties trailed by seven (39-32) before Chambers got his second three to fall and pull Mansfield back to within four.
At the break, the Golden Bears led 41-38. Wilson led the way for the Mountaineers with 11 points. Chambers added in 10 points while shooting 40% from behind the arc.
Mansfield took their first lead since the 12:46 mark of the first half early in the second with a Sterling Scott layup with 17:24 to play.
The two sides went back and forth over the next five minutes, the largest advantage being three in favor of the Mountaineers following a Wilson layup to put Mansfield ahead 55-52.
Kutztown reclaimed the lead with 8:41 to play and held a 61-59 lead at the under-eight media timeout.
Still clinging to their two-point lead, the Golden Bears called a 30-second timeout with 1:54 to go.
Coming out of the timeout, Kutztown turned the ball over as Mansfield gained possession looking to tie or take the lead late in the second half.
Back-to-back turnovers from both sides led to a Golden Bears floater to put KU up by four (66-62) with 30 seconds to go.
Kutztown iced the game with free throws and held on to win a tightly contested Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference match-up.
