Mansfield Concludes Four-Game Series With ESU

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - Mansfield baseball (7-18, 3-13 PSAC East) went on the road to finish off a four-game series with the East Stroudsburg Warriors (24-3, 12-0 PSAC East) on Saturday, March 30.

GAME 1

The Mountaineers had an early opportunity in the first after Ryan Scott and Jacob Houtz each singled to put runners on first and third. However, the Mounties couldn't push across a run as the game remained tied at zero.

Mansfield once again created traffic on the bases in the second with a Ryan Verbonitz walk and Jeffrey Coakley single putting runners on the corners with only one out. The ESU started buckled down for the second straight inning, retiring the next two batters via the strikeout and keeping the game knotted at 0-0.

Houtz got the scoring started in the top of the third with a solo home run over the left-field wall.

Austin Lewis started game three of the series striking out eight of the first 12 ESU batters and faced the minimum over the first four innings.

In the fifth East Stroudsburg loaded the bases with no outs. The following batter drew a walk, tying the game at one. Lewis held the Warriors there as he got two ground outs and his ninth strikeout of the game to work out of the inning.

ESU took the lead in their final at-bat of game one, doubling on an 0-1 pitch to drive in their second run of the game.

The first two Mountaineer batters reached base in the seventh but couldn't find the tying run and dropped game one by a final score of 2-1.

Lewis finished with 6.0 innings pitched, allowed two runs on four hits, and struck out nine.

GAME 2

The Warriors carried the momentum into game two taking a 1-0 lead after an RBI double in the first.

Mansfield answered right back in the top of the second scoring two runs to take a 2-1 lead. Coakley tripled to right center scoring Ryan Sekulski and Verbonitz on the play.

ESU responded by scoring two in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a solo home run and an RBI single to go ahead by one.

East Stroudsburg added two more in the bottom of the third with a two-run home run, stretching their advantage to 5-2.

In the sixth, ESU added another insurance run with an RBI single to push their lead to four.

Warrior pitching settled in, facing just 16 Mansfield batters over the final five innings to nail down a 6-2 game-two victory.
