Pitchers’ Duels Favor Millersville, Mounties Drop Doubleheader

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Mansfield Mountaineers baseball team (6-9, 2-4 PSAC East) traveled to the sixth-ranked Millersville Marauders (16-3, 6-0 PSAC East) for a Friday afternoon doubleheader.

GAME 1

All the scoring came in the first when Millersville jumped on Mountaineer starter Austin Lewis early stringing together three straight singles to take a 1-0 lead. Millersville plated two more in the inning with a two RBI single.

Lewis settled in after a tough first inning allowing just two hits the remainder of the game. He would finish the day throwing 6.0 innings, allowing three runs on six hits, and totaling three strikeouts. Lewis gave the Mountaineers the chance to stay in the game but the Mansfield offense was unable to capitalize on any chances.

Zachary Shertzer, who was 2-3 in game one, gave the Mountaineers their first hit of the game with his double in the top of the fourth.

Millersville defeated Mansfield by a final score of 3-0 in Game One's old-fashioned pitchers' duel. Each starter went the distance allowing a combined five hits after the first inning

GAME 2

Eric Gustofson got the start on the bump for game two. He hurled 6.0 innings, allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out seven Marauders.

Millersville jumped on Mansfield quickly again in game two, grabbing a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first thanks to an RBI double.

The score remained 1-0 until the fourth when the Marauders added another with an RBI groundout to push their lead to two.

Each starter was working quickly as both sides couldn't find any more offense until the seventh.

In the seventh, Mansfield threatened to tie the game after Jackson Halla doubled home Cole Serfass to cut the deficit to one.

With two outs and the tying run on second, the Mountaineers couldn't get the crucial hit they were looking for and drop game two 2-1.
