Marauders’ Second Half Surge Helps Down Mounties

The Mounties cap off the weekend with a Saturday clash against the Marauders.

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Mansfield Mountaineers women's basketball team (11-13, 8-11 PSAC East) were bested by Millersville (10-14, 8-10 PSAC East) on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action, 85-75, as the Marauders now move into the fourth seed after the victory.

Jasmine Hilton led the Mounties with 20 points, her sixth time this season and went perfect (8-8) from the charity stripe.

Kristen Fulford dropped 16 points on the afternoon, making four three-pointes, her most in a game for her career. Katie Sheeler made nine free throws, her career high in a game.

Millersville started out with the hot hand, making four of their first five shots in the early minutes to be the first team to double figures, holding the 11-4 advantage.

Seven points occurred in the final minute, including a jumper by Alivia Paeglow with six seconds remaining in the quarter to give the Mounties double digits, but the Marauders held the 18-10 edge after the first ten minutes.

Hilton scored four points in the first four minutes and seven unanswered points, including layups from Paeglow and Cydney Stanton to cut the home team's lead to 23-21.

Two straight three-pointers from Emilie Leidig gave Mansfield their first lead of the game at 29-27.

The Marauders earned the lead back within a minute at 30-29, and a layup with three seconds remaining in the half helped hold a slim 36-34 lead into the locker rooms.

Mansfield dropped 24 points in the second quarter, their second most of the season in this quarter, with the most (26) also coming against Millersville this season.

To open the second half, Fulford popped a three-pointer to give Mansfield back the 39-38 hold. An and one from Minyhah Easterling evened the game out at 42.

Millersville dropped nine points in the next three minutes to hold the 51-45 lead in their own Pucillo Gymnasium. This was a part of a strong 57.1% (8-14) shooting quarter for the Marauders to take the 57-51 lead, heading into the final ten minutes of this conference battle.

Three players for the host entered the final quarter on their last foul, but it did not make a difference for the Marauders.

Nine points from Fulford in the first three minutes scared the fans, bringing her total to 14 points, but Millersville still held onto a 66-62 edge.

Hilton picked up her sixth 20-point game of the season with 2:54 remaining to make the score 76-70, but this was not enough as the Marauders moved into the fourth seed with the 85-75 victory.
