MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Mansfield Mountaineers women's basketball team (5-4) was defeated by the Edinboro Fighting Scots (7-1) on Saturday (Dec. 7) afternoon by a final score of 65-56.
Kristen Fulford scored a team-high 16 points on a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line.
Katie Sheeler added another 15 points.
Cydney Stanton and
Paris Anthony each pulled in a team-high eight rebounds.
Both teams' offensives started the game at a slow pace with the score halfway through the first quarter 8-6, with the Fighting Scots ahead.
Edinboro closed the quarter on an 11-1 run to take a 12-point lead.
The second opened with both teams trading baskets as the Mountaineers still trailed by 12 halfway through the quarter.
At the break, Mansfield trailed 32 – 21 doubling their first quarter production to close out the half.
Anthony pushed the start of the third quarter in favor of the Mounties with a lay-up right out of the gate.
The Fighting Scots stretched their lead to 17 using a 17 – 4 run in the first five minutes of the third.
Mansfield found their stride in the third scoring 15 points by the end of the quarter.
The Mountaineers strong defense held the Edinboro offense at bay in the last quarter.
In the final two minutes of play the Mounties were unable to get any closer than nine as the Fighting Scotts offense put the game away.
