MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Mansfield Men's basketball (0-1) tipped off their season Saturday, November 9 with a 90-73 loss against Point Park University (1-0) in the Ron Wilson Classic.
Scott Woodring finished the opener with 17 points and five rebounds on 7-12 from the floor.
LJ Stansbury was the Mounties second-leading scorer with 12 points and led the Mountaineers with four assists.
Owen Chambers opened the scoring on the season for the Mounties with his first three-point make of the year.
Mansfield jumped out to an early 11-4 lead on a quick five points from Woodring but Point Park got the game back to a one-possession game on their ensuing two trips down the floor.
The two sides went back and forth throughout the first half with neither team being able to open up anything more than a seven-point advantage.
Chambers added his seventh point of the first half with 28 seconds to go and cut the Pioneers lead to 42-37.
At the half, Woodring led the way with ten points and Stansbury added another six.
Coming out of the break, Mansfield tied the game at 44 after a Woodring layup.
With under 12 minutes to go in the game, the Mountaineers held a two-point advantage after a Julian Wilson layup gave them the lead.
Point Park utilized an 8-0 run to go up 68-61 with under 10 to play. The Mounties answered with a 5-0 run of their own to pull back to within two.
At the under-four media timeout, Mansfield found themselves down five, 72-67. Back-to-back turnovers saw the Pioneers increase their lead to 11 with 3:14 left to play.
Point Park buried another three to force a Mansfield timeout with just over 2:30 to play as the Mounties trailed 81-69.
The Pioneers were able to keep the Mountaineers at bay and extended their lead the rest of the way as they defeated the Mounties in the season opener.
