MANSFIELD, Pa. - The Mansfield Mountaineers women's basketball team (2-1) hosted their 2024-25 home opener against Penn State Schuylkill (0-2) as the Mounties began their year at Marion Decker Gymnasium with an offensive onslaught, earning a 91-45 nonconference victory.Â
Katie Sheeler led the team scoring with 24 points on the night and picked up five rebounds.Â
Danae Ellzy scored 19 points and tabbed three assists, and Paris Anthony was the other double-digit scorer at 18 and grabbed seven rebounds.
Sheeler dropped the first basket of the home schedule with a three pointer, as part of a 12-6 start for the Mounties.Â
Penn State Schuylkill closed the lead to one possession, bringing the contest to 14-12 after six of eight points over the next two minutes, including a 1,000-point scorer for the Lions.Â
The Mountaineers finished out the first quarter six of the final eight points to hold the 20-14 lead after the quarter.Â
Penn State Schuylkill caused a scare to begin the second quarter, with three baskets and four free throws to close the gap, 26-25.
To end the quarter, Mansfield finished out on an impressive 17-2 run with Anthony collecting six points to end the half. Sheeler finished the half with 16 points as the Mounties led 43-27.
Mansfield found their rhythm and started rolling in the second half. Ellzy pulled 14 points on a hot streak over the quarter, and the Mounties allowed just six points over the quarter to hold the 69-33 advantage.Â
The Mountaineers ended the night at strong as the third quarter to earn their home opener victory, 91-45.
