MANSFIELD, Pa. - The Mansfield Mountaineers women's basketball team (3-1) played their non-conference opponent Swarthmore College Garnet (1-3) and finished the first week of play at Marion Decker Gymnasium with two wins at home, with a close 68-65 battle.
Katie Sheeler would lead the Mounties with twenty-two points and four assists.
Danae Ellzy scored sixteen points on the day.
The Mounties opened up the first quarter with a commanding start, opening the quarter with a 10-0 run. The Mounties went on to finish the first with a 21-7 lead. Sheeler led the Mounties through the first quarter with ten points and one assist.
Swarthmore came out of the first quarter with their legs underneath them and put nineteen points up in the second quarter. The Garnet put a dagger to close the gap with a step-back three to have the score at 31-26 at halftime.
Both teams came out of the half and went back and forth in the third. The Mountaineers pulled away in the middle of the third, with their highest lead coming off of a driving layup from Ellzy who ended the game with 14 points.
Swarthmore clawed their way back in the final minutes of the third putting the game at only a two-point margin for the Mounties going into the final quarter of play at 58-56.
The Mounties and The Garnet battled tough in the final quarter of play, Swarthmore tied the game with a deep three with six minutes left in the quarter. The game stayed close all the way until the end. Sheeler sank two free throws and put up a defensive stop to secure the Mountie win 68-65.
