MANSFIELD, Pa. - The Mountaineers men's basketball team (0-3) was defeated by Penn State Schuylkill (1-2) 87-85 in their home opener on Tuesday (Nov. 12) night.
Nasir Brown scored 21 points, six rebounds, and two steals.
LJ Stansbury added 15 points, six rebounds, and three steals.
Sterling Scott also scored 15 points, while dishing out seven assists.
Penn State Schuylkill took an early 11-5 advantage at the under-16 media timeout of the first half.
Mansfield's 10-0 run out of the break vaulted them in front of Schuylkill halfway through the first.
At the under-eight media timeout, Mansfield's Scott had eight of the team's 26 points giving the Mountaineers a four-point lead.
The Mountaineers led 47-40 at the break. The Mounties lit up the field from behind the arc in the first half knocking down eight threes. Scott (10 points) and Brown (13 points) each hit two in the half to lead the Mounties in scoring across the first 20 minutes of play.
Schuylkill's 17-9 run across the opening five minutes of the second half forced a Mansfield timeout as the Mounties trailed 57-56 with 15 minutes to play.
Schuylkill took a seven-point lead with nine minutes to play after Mahki Jones knocked down his sixth three of the game.
Mansfield cut the Schuylkill advantage down to 69-66 with 7:11 to go in the game, after back-to-back layups.
At the under-four media timeout, the Mountaineers had pulled within one cutting the Schuylkill lead to 76-75.
Scott's three put the Mounties up one with 2:15 to go.
Penn State Schuylkill answered with a mid-range jumper to reclaim the lead with a minute to go.
With under 30 seconds to go, Brown drew a foul on his layup attempt. After making the first, Diarmid Stewart came up with a massive offensive rebound to give Mansfield possession back with 22.7 to go.
Schuylkill had possession, tied at 79 with 3.8 to go. Their game-winner attempt hit back iron and sent the game into overtime.
Penn State Schuylkill went up five after Jones drilled his eighth three of the night.
Trailing 87-83 late in the Overtime period, Julian Wilson hit a quick layup to cut the deficit to two.
Schuylkill went 0-2 from the free-throw line on their ensuing possession.
The Mountaineers missed a game-winning three as the time expired and fell to Penn State Schuylkill.
