Chambers’ 18 Points Leads Mounties Past D’Youville

MANSFIELD, Pa. - The Mountaineers men's basketball team (1-3) defeated the D'Youville Saints (1-3) on Saturday (Nov. 16) afternoon by a final score of 68-66.

Owen Chambers led the Mountaineers with 18 points on 5-8 shooting and knocking down three threes.

LJ Stansbury finished with 11 points and six assists.

Mansfield trailed 10-5 early but back-to-back baskets from Sa'ir Alsbrooks and Jayden Montgomery cut the Saints lead to one.

The Mountaineers got into the bonus early as Nasir Brown knocked down both ends of the one-and-one at the 12:01 mark.

At the under-eight media timeout, the Mounties were down 22-13. Seven of the Mountaineers 13 came from the free throw line as Mansfield were looking to attack early.

Mansfield, down 29-25, entered the double bonus with over four minutes to go in the first half as the Saints had four players with two early fouls.

With 2:45 to go in the half Montgomery tied the game at 29 with a driving layup over two Saints defenders.

Owen Chambers answered the ensuing D'Youville three with one of his own, knotting the game at 32 with two minutes remaining in the first.

D'Youville closed the half on a 9-4 run to take a 41-36 lead into the break.

Chambers led Mansfield with 11 points at halftime, while Scott Woodring added another seven and grabbed four rebounds.

A back-and-forth opening eight minutes of the second half found the Mounties trailing by four at the under-12-minute timeout.

LJ Stansbury cut the Saints lead to three after being fouled on a three-point attempt and knocking down all three free throws with 5:30 to play.

Sterling Scott tied the game at 62 on the next Mansfield possession with a three from the left wing.

Stansbury gave the Mounties a 66-64 lead after a steal and fast-break layup with 3:34 left in the second half.

With 7.4 to go in the game, D'Youville pushed the pace and found a backdoor lob opportunity. The layup attempt was strong off the back iron and Julian Wilson pulled in the rebound for Mansfield to secure their first win of the season.
