SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -
Zachary Shertzer drove in five runs to lead the Mansfield University baseball team to a 5-4, 8-6 split at Slippery Rock University in non-conference action on Tuesday, April 11.
The Mountaineers (9-20 overall) are winners of four of their last five games.
In game two, Shertzer led the Mountaineer offense with his fifth hit and fifth RBI on the day, adding his second double.
Jacob Houtz and
Josh Farina also drove in two runs, while
Kurt Biesecker collected a pair of hits.
The Rock (15-14 overall) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings.
However, the Mounties finally got things going in the top of the fourth when Farina drove in Biesecker, before erupting for six runs in the fifth to go ahead 7-4. During the rally,
Marcus Nales knocked in a run, while Shertzer and Houtz each drove in a pair.
The Rock hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth to trim MU's lead to 7-5, but
Jeffrey Coakley erased the run with an RBI single in the seventh and the Mounties held on for the victory.
Luke Payne earned the victory out of the bullpen, limiting The Rock to one run over 1.2 innings, while
Evan Woznick tallied his first career save, holding SRU scoreless over two innings.
In game one, after trailing 1-0 early, the Mounties rallied to take their first lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning off RBIs by Nales (2B) and Shertzer.
However, The Rock blasted two home runs over the fourth and fifth inning to jump out to a 5-2 lead heading into the sixth.
Shertzer struck again for MU in the top of the seventh with a 2-RBI triple to center field to make it 5-4, but The Rock held strong from there to secure the victory.
Shertzer led the Mountaineer offense by going 2-for-4 with three RBI and a double. Nales and
Brittain Shander also doubled.
Justin Marykwas took the rubber for MU and went 4.1 innings, finishing with two earned runs and three strikeouts in the loss. Erin Rossman earned the victory in relief for The Rock.
Joseph Ehland and Luke Trueman both homered to lead SRU's offense.
