UPDATED: Baseball Splits With Virginia State on Sunday, Returns Home After 2-2 Weekend

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ETTRICK, Va. - Ryan King tossed a gem to lead the Mansfield University baseball team to an 8-1 non-conference victory in game one against Virginia State University on the road on Sunday, March 5. The Mounties dropped the nightcap, 5-1.

The Mounties split both days at Virginia State University and will enter conference competition with a 5-6 overall record.

The Mounties opened the scoring in the top of the second inning when Zach Spray blasted a two-run shot over the wall to give the Mounties a 2-1 lead.

The Trojans scored their lone run in the ensuing frame to cut the lead in half, but the Mounties countered with three runs in the top of the third to extend their lead to 5-1. Josh Farina (double), Spray, and Ryan Scott all drove in runs during the rally.

The Mounties added an insurance run in the fifth, before putting the game away in their half of the seventh with a pair of runs to round out the scoring.

King picked up his second victory on the mound this season, tossing six-complete innings, allowing just one run with six strikeouts. Bobby Curry tossed a scoreless seventh inning in relief.

Spray had a huge day at the plate to lead the MU offense, finishing 3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and his first big fly of the year. Alan Bautista, Brittain Shander, and Farina also finished with multiple hits.

Jody Morris landed the loss on the mound for the Trojans, allowing six earned runs on eight hits in four innings of work.

In game two, the Tojans got their revenge early, striking for three runs in the bottom of the first before adding a run in the fifth to build a 5-0 advantage.

The Mounties got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth when Ryan Verbonitz plated Zachary Shertzer with a single, but the Trojans immediately erased the run in their half of the sixth, while getting the final three outs to secure the victory.

Shertzer led the Mounties offense with two hits, including a double, and a run scored.

For the trojans, Ryan Messer led the offense with three RBI, while Tahraun Hamm landed the win in the circle, tossing the full seven innings and allowing just one run.
