MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Mansfield University baseball team (5-11, 0-5 PSAC East) fell to Millersville University (22-4, 6-0 PSAC East), 13-6, in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action in their home opener at Joseph Shaute Field on Tuesday, March 21.
Josh Farina led the Mountaineers' offense, finishing 2-for-3 with three RBIs, including a 2-run homer, his first of the year. Marcus Nales added a pair of hits and Jeffrey Coakley tripled, while Zach Spray (2B) drove in a pair of runs.
The Marauders opened the scoring by plating three runs in the top of the second thanks to two Mountaineer errors and a two-run blast over the centerfield wall.
The Mounties countered with two runs in the bottom half after Farina sent a two-run shot to rightfield to cut the deficit to 3-2.
However, the Marauders immediately erased the Mounties' efforts with a pair of runs in the top of the third, extending their lead to 5-2.
The Marauders weren't done there, as they piled on eight runs over their next two at-bats to extend their lead to 13-2.
The Mounties trimmed the deficit to 13-4 with sacrifice RBI fly balls by Farina and Spray in the sixth and seventh inning, respectively.
Mountie starting pitcher Jacob Houtz landed the loss in the circle, allowing five runs (three runs) in two innings of work. Luke Payne did not allow an earned run in 3.2 innings out of the bullpen.
For Millersville, Garet Blankenbill earned the victory after entering the game in the bottom of the third and tossing a scoreless frame. Sam Morris led the Marauders on offense with three RBIs, coming on a 3-run homer.
