Verbonitz Homers, Mounties Fall at Home to West Chester

MANSFIELD, Pa. – Ryan Verbonitz hit his third homer of the season to give the Mansfield University baseball team (5-12, 0-6 PSAC East) a chance, but West Chester University (14-6, 4-3 PSAC East) finished on top, 8-4, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest on Friday afternoon, March 24 at Joseph Shaute Field.

The Mounties outhit the Golden Rams 11-9, but couldn't get the timely hit they needed and committed four errors in the field while West Chester finished with just one.

Joining Verbonitz with multiple hits for MU was Jacob Houtz and Brittain Shander, who each finished with three. Houtz doubled twice and drove in a run, while Zachary Shertzer also added a double and an RBI.

The Golden Rams jumped out to a 6-0 lead through their first three at-bats off six hits and a pair of Mountaineer errors.

The Mounties cut the deficit to four with a pair of runs in their half of the third, thanks to back-to-back RBI doubles by Houtz and Shertzer.

MU reliever Luke Payne recorded the first zero of the afternoon in the top of the fourth to allow the Mounties to trim West Chester's lead to three when Verbonitz singled to plate Jeffrey Coakley.

Payne continued to throw up zeros through the next two innings and the Mounties responded again with a solo run in the sixth off a big fly from Verbonitz.

However, the Golden Rams responded with a two-spot in their half of the seventh to rebuild their lead to 8-4.

The Mounties left four runners stranded over the next three innings and West Chester held on for the victory.

Austin Lewis (2-3) got the start on the mound for MU, landing the loss, allowing six runs (two earned) through 2 and 1/3 innings. Payne did his job in relief, tossing 2 and 2/3 scoreless innings. Eric Gustofson was charged with two runs in two innings of work out of the pen before giving the ball to Josh Colon who pitched a scoreless ninth.

For the Golden Rams, Joe Sperone earned the victory on the mound, tossing seven complete innings, finishing with four earned runs on ten hits. Joe Kaleck led WCU's offense with three hits and five RBIs.
