Mounties Downed at Shepherd

Jasmine Hilton scored over 20 points for the fourth time this season.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.V. – Jasmine Hilton dominated with a 26-point, 10-rebound double-double, but the Mansfield University women's basketball team (2-20, 1-17 PSAC) was edged on the road, 73-67, at Shepherd University (1-21, 1-16 PSAC) in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest on Wednesday night, Feb. 8.

Hilton on 8-of-19 shots from the floor, including three shots from behind the arch, while knocking down 7-of-8 free throws. Hilton also led the contest with three steals to go with her 10 rebounds. Alivia Paeglow finished behind Hilton with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Madison Fox knocked down three trifectas to finish with nine points and six rebounds. Emilie Leidig and Kenedy Stroup each finished with a pair of steals.

After falling behind 14-10 to start the contest, the Mounties closed out the final two minutes of the first quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 17-14 lead into the second.

However, the Rams responded with an outburst in the second period to outscore the Mounties 20-12, taking a 34-29 lead into the break.

The Mounties cut the deficit to one score heading into the final period, but their shooting woes continued, and the Rams knocked down 10 shots at the foul line to close out the victory down the stretch.

After shooting a solid 47 percent (7-of-15) from the floor to build the lead in the first quarter, the Mounties' offense began to stall, failing to shoot over 35 percent the rest of the way.

The Mounties' defense helped them stay in it, as they forced a game-high 22 turnovers which led to a game-high 30 points. The Rams did not score off a single Mountaineer turnover.

The Rams shot over 50 percent in the second half (11-of-20), while knocking down 6-of-11 shots from behind the arch to yield off any chance of a Mountaineer comeback.

Both teams made 23 shots from the floor in the game, but the Rams led 14-9 on shots from behind the arch to make up the scoring difference.

For the Rams, Peyton Grant finished with a game-high 28 points on 8-of-10 3-pointers, while Kendal Haggerty added 23 points on 9-of-13 shots at the foul line.
