Mounties Upset No. 21 California (Pa.) to close out 2023

MANSFIELD, Pa.- The Mansfield Mountaineers women's basketball team took down No. 21 California (Pa.) (8-3, 3-2 PSAC West) by a score of 65-54 inside Decker Gymnasium to close out the calendar year on Saturday, Dec. 30.
 
It is the first upset over a top 25 team of the Senefelder era. This also marks the first win over the Vulcans in the series.
 
Jasmine Hilton led the Mounties (5-5, 2-3 PSAC East) with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Katie Sheeler added 16 points and Cydney Stanton had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
 
Mansfield and Cal (Pa.) traded baskets in the first quarter of play. Mansfield corralled seven offensive rebounds that lead to 11 second chance points. Cal (Pa.) led 18-16.
 
The Mounties took off in the second quarter, after the game was tied up at 24 halfway through the period. Mansfield ended the half on a 12-4 run, which included scores by five different athletes, highlighted by a buzzer beating three-point bucket by Kristen Fulford. The Mounties lead by eight at the half 36-28.
 
Stanton scored six in the third quarter as the Vulcans were challenging for the lead. The gap shrunk to a single point in the final minute, but the Mounties never relinquished the lead. Mansfield led 46-43.
 
 The Mountaineers closed out the contest strong from the free throw line going 8-13. Cal (Pa.) could not find the outside shot all game going 0-13 from three.

The Mounties start the new year with a road trip to No. 5 Gannon for their final crossover clash of the season. This game against the Golden Knights is on Wednesday, Jan. 3 with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.
