Mountaineers Defeat Golden Eagles, Tie Best Start Since 2010-11


MANSFIELD, Pa.- The Mansfield Mountaineers women's basketball team (4-1, 1-0 PSAC) won their third straight game on Friday afternoon defeating the Clarion Golden Eagles (0-5, 0-1 PSAC) by a final score of 82-71. The win improves the Mounties record to 4-1, tying their best start to a season since 2010-11. 

Jasmine Hilton entered the game just 14 points outside the top 10 all-time in scoring for the Mountaineers. She was able to eclipse that mark in the middle of the third quarter with a foul line jumper. Hilton finished the game with 20 points and six rebounds. 

Katie Sheeler ended the game as Mansfield's second-leading scorer with 17 points on 3-7 shooting from three. 

Kristen Fulford recorded 16 points and had a team-high five assists.

The Mountaineers opened the game on a 10-0 run, building an early comfortable lead to begin the first quarter. Mansfield ended the quarter with a 26-14 lead. Sheeler led the way with nine points and three rebounds. 

Mansfield extended their lead to 17 at the break as Hilton and Sheeler each had 12 points in the half. Fulford had a team-high four assists in the half. 

The Mounties held strong to their double-digit lead in the third quarter as they continued to control the game and closed out the quarter with a 15-point lead. 

Mansfield was able to keep the Golden Eagles at bay in the fourth quarter and close out their third straight victory.

he Mountaineers are back home tomorrow, Saturday, December 2 to take on the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown Mountain Cats. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 pm in Decker Gymnasium.
