Mountaineers Fall to Fayetteville State

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Mansfield Mountaineers women's Basketball team (1-1) fell to the Fayetteville State Broncos (2-0) on Saturday night.  Jasmine Hilton was the leading scorer for the Mounties. Scoring a total of 19 points on 7-15 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds.  Sophomore guard Lauren Miller was the second-leading scorer for the Mountaineers adding a career-high 12 points and knocking down two threes.  Abril Bowser, Emilie Leidig, and Alivia Paeglow tied for the team lead in assists with three. Leidig opened the scoring for the Mounties with a left-wing three-point shot giving Mansfield the early 3-2 lead.  A tightly contested first quarter ended with Fayetteville State holding a slim one-point lead after the Broncos got a steal off a Mountaineers inbound and finished it with a fast break layup to close out the quarter.  The Mountaineers couldn't get open looks to fall early in the second quarter, as the Broncos were able to grow their lead to 12 before the media timeout. Coming out of the timeout, Mansfield strung together some defensive stops and cut the deficit to eight before halftime.  Fayetteville State was able to capitalize off of 11 Mansfield turnovers for 17 points as they led 37-29 at the break. Hilton paced the Mounties in the first half with 10 points and six rebounds. Katie Sheeler added six points on a perfect 2-2 from three. As a team, the Mountaineers shot 6-13 (46.2%) from three in the first half.  Mansfield went cold in the third quarter shooting a combined 2-12 from the field, 0-6 from three, and committing eight turnovers as the Broncos increased their lead to 21 heading into the fourth quarter.  The Mountaineers' highest-scoring quarter wasn't enough to lift them out of the hole as they lose to Fayetteville State 67-52. UP NEXT: The Mounties travel to Penn State Schuykill on Friday, November 17. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 pm.
