Mansfield Opens 2023 Season With Win Against Bowie State

SHIPPENSBURG, PA. - The Mansfield Mountaineers women's basketball team (1-0) defeated the Bowie State Bulldogs (0-1) 66-57 in Friday afternoon's season opener.

Jasmine Hilton led the way for the Mounties as she recorded her first double-double of the season scoring 16 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. 

Danae Ellzy finished as the second-leading for Mansfield, totaling 11 points shooting 3-5 from the field. 

Cydney Stanton pulled in a team-high 11 rebounds while adding six points.

Stanton recorded the first bucket of the season for the Mountaineers as they opened the first quarter on an 8-0 run. Mansfield finished the quarter with a 17-14 lead, 12 of those points coming from the three-point line (4-7).

Freshman Katie Sheeler buried a half-court shot at the buzzer to propel the Mounties to a 27-24 lead at the half. She led the Mountaineers in the first half with nine points on 3-7 shooting from three. 

Mansfield struggled to take care of the ball in the first half, committing 14 turnovers leading to 12 points for Bowie State, allowing them to stay in the game. 

The Bulldogs started the third quarter fast with an 8-0 run of their own to take a five-point lead. Hilton was able to put an end to the Bowie State run, knocking down two threes from the left wing on back-to-back possessions to lift the Mounties back in front. 

Hilton scored the first eight points of the second half for Mansfield as the 16th leading scorer in Mansfield history started to find her shot. Following the personal 8-0 Hilton run, the Mountaineers were able to stretch the run extending it to 13-0.

The Mounties found their stride in the third on the back of Hilton who scored 10 of the Mountaineers 22 as they carried a ten-point lead into the fourth quarter.

Mansfield was able to keep the lead around 10 for the majority of the fourth quarter as they secured their first win of the season.
