MANSFIELD, Pa. -
Jasmine Hilton and
Alivia Paeglow each poured in a team-high 14 points to lead the Mansfield University women's basketball team in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest with visiting Kutztown University, but the Mounties fell 71-49 on Wednesday night, Jan. 18 inside Decker Gymnasium.
The Mounties fall to 1-13 overall and 0-10 in conference, while the Golden Bears improve to 9-7 overall and 7-3 in the PSAC.
Kutztown's early defensive pressure led to offense, as they were able to jump out to a 20-9 lead in the first quarter, scoring six points in transition with four coming off MU turnovers.
However, the Mounties got things going on the offensive end in the second quarter, outscoring KU, 15-14.
Kenedy Stroup scored five points in the period to ignite the Mounties off the bench and trim the deficit to 34-24 heading into the break.
A layup by Paeglow at the 8:51 mark in the third quarter cut the Kutztown lead back to single digits, but the Golden Bears closed out the period on an 11-8 run to take a 52-38 lead into the fourth.
Emily Leidig drilled a 3-pointer to open the scoring in the final period, but Kutztown responded on an 11-2 run over the next three minutes to put the game out of reach.
Hilton and Paeglow finished a combined 7-of-8 at the charity stripe and led the Mounties with five field goals each, while pulling in eight and nine rebounds, respectively. Stroup added a career-high 10 points off the bench, while
Bella Skatell dished out four assists in her first start on the year.
The Golden Bears outshot the Mounties by 15 percent from the floor, finishing 28-of-61 (46 percent) while limiting MU to 18 makes on 58 attempts (31 percent). Kutztown did most of their damage from behind the arch, drilling 10 3-pointers and holding the Mounties to three.
For the Golden Bears, Naia Pulliam led all scorers with 17 points.
The Mounties return to Decker Gym on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 21 for a 1 p.m. PSAC showdown with Eastern Division foe Shepherd University.
