Women's Basketball Edged by PSAC East Leading Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Mansfield University women's basketball team (1-12, 0-9 PSAC) fell to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division leader Shippensburg University (13-2, 8-1 PSAC), 70-48, on the road on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 14.

After the Raiders jumped out to a 6-0 lead through the opening five minutes, the Mounties countered with a 11-5 run to tie the game at 11-11 with 2:17 to go. The Mounties' second unit scored nine points during the run.

However, the momentum slowing began to swing and the Raiders started to create distance with a 20-9 second quarter and 19-12 third period to extend their lead to 53-34 heading into the fourth.

The Mounties hung with the uptempo Raider offense in the final period of action, but Ship once again came out on top, 17-14, to close out the victory.

Cydney Stanton had the best game of her young career, topping the Mounties in scoring with 11 points and eight rebounds. Kenedy Stroup also provided a spark off the bench, adding nine points thanks to 5-of-5 shooting at the foul line, while Emilie Leidig led the starters with eight points with two makes from behind the arch. Jasmine Hilton and Alivia Paeglow (five rebounds) each finished with six points.

The Mounties held the Raiders to 38 percent (26-of-69) shooting from the field, including a game-low 14 percent (2-of-15) from behind the arch. However, the Mounties shot just 32 percent (17-of-54) from the floor, while committing 27 turnovers which led to 28 Shippensburg points. The Raiders also led 48-20 in points from the point and 16-11 in second chance points.

Conference scoring leader Ariel Jones led five Raiders with double figures, scoring 16 points, adding seven rebounds and six steals.

The Mansfield University Department of Athletics is set to honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a Day of Service and in celebration of Dr. King's legacy, the Mounties will host a 2023 Community Night Event at the home basketball doubleheader with Kutztown University on Wednesday, Jan. 18. Admission will be FREE for all.
