Big Second-Half Powers Mounties Past Griffins

MANSFIELD, Pa. – Five different players scored in double figures and the Mansfield University men's basketball team shot a cool 57 percent from the floor in the second-half to upend Seton Hill University, 79-69, in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover action on Saturday night, Dec. 3 inside Decker Gymnasium.

Coming out of the break knotted at 35-35, the Mounties (2-3, 1-1 PSAC) outscored the Griffins (5-3, 1-1 PSAC), 44-34, thanks to 57 percent shooting (16-of-28), including 90 percent (9-of-10) shooting at the foul line, to walk away with their first conference victory of the season.

The two squads remained neck-and-neck for the opening six minutes of the second half, until a trifecta by junior Gabe Perez at the 14:34 mark sparked a 14-4 run over the ensuing six minutes to give the Mounties their first double-digit lead of the contest, 58-48, with just over eight minutes to go.

The Griffins cut the deficit to single digits on their next possession, but freshman Ty Barrett knocked down a shot from deep to put the Mounties up 12 with seven minutes to go and MU never looked back.

Sophomore Scott Woodring led five different Mountaineers in double-figures with 16 points on an efficient 8-of-13 shooting, while pulling in a team-high nine rebounds. Sophomore Idris Ali came in behind him with 15 points, while knocking down all eight attempts at the charity stripe, while junior Gabe Perez (eight rebounds) and freshman Saraj Ali (seven rebounds) each poured in 13 points. Freshman Michael Dickson led the second unit with 12 points and seven rebounds to round out the Mounties in double figures.

The Mountaineers offense was flowing in the second half as they missed just 12 shots and knocked down 9-of-10 shots at the foul line. The Mounties dished out a game-high 18 assists, while their defense held the Griffins to 39 percent (13-of-33) shooting in the second half. MU was also a plus three on the glass.

For the Griffins, Samuel Tabe scored a game-high 20 points on 9-of-17 shooting, while pulling in five rebounds.

The Mounties have a week off before hitting the road for a non-conference game at Frostburg State University in Frostburg, Md., beginning at 7:00 p.m.
