Men's Basketball Falls on the Road at Frostburg State

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Mansfield University men's basketball team (2-4 overall) fell on the road to non-conference opponent Frostburg State University (4-7 overall), 102-81 on Tuesday night, Dec. 13.
 
Idris Ali led four Mountaineers in double-figures with a team-high 18 points, four assists and four rebounds. Gabe Perez continued his strong start to his junior season, finishing with 15 points and five rebounds, while Scott Woodring (14 points) and Manir Waller (11 points) rounded out MU's top scorers. Saraj Ali added a team-high six rebounds and seven points and Michael Dickson led the second unit with nine points off the bench.
 
In the first half, the Mounties knocked down back-to-back trifectas by Perez and Woodring to lead 6-4 with 17:20 to go. However, the Bobcats countered with a 13-1 run over the next three minutes to take a double-digit lead, 17-7, with just over 14 minutes remaining.
 
The Mounties scored just 10 points over the ensuing nine minutes and the Bobcats were clicking on all cylinders, extending their lead to as much as 30 with 4:03 to go in the half. The Mounties closed the first half on a 12-4 run to cut the deficit to 50-28 heading into the break.
 
In the second half, the Mounties turned things around offensively, doubling their makes from the floor with 17 and from three with six, while making all 11 shots from the free-throw line. MU outscored the Bobcats, 53-52 in the half, but FSU's hot start proved to be insurmountable.
 
The Mounties had a solid night at the foul line, knocking down 23-of-25 attempts, including a perfect 11-of-11 in the second half, for a game-high 92 percent. However, the Mounties struggled from the floor, connecting on just 31 percent of their shots (25-of-80), including 15 percent from downtown (8-of-32).
 
The Mountaineer defense forced a game-high 14 turnovers, but the Bobcats took advantage of their second chances, leading the game in rebounding (34-22) and second-chance points (18-5).
 
The Bobcats also shot nearly 50 percent from the floor (33-of-67) while knocking down 11-of-25 shots from behind the arch and 25-of-30 attempts at the charity stripe.
 
For the Bobcats, Tairell Fletchell and Agyei Edwards led the explosive effort on offense with a game-high 26 and 25 points, respectively.
 
The Mounties are back in action on Sunday, Dec. 18 at 3 p.m. when they visit PSAC West foe Slippery Rock University.
