Baseball Battle Back, Fall Late to Concord, 6-4

GLENVILLE, W.V. – Sophomore Brittain Shander registered his fourth multi-hit game of the season and three Mansfield University baseball players drove in runs, but Concord University scored the game-winning runs in the sixth and held on for a 6-4 non-conference victory in Glenville, W.V. on Saturday, Feb. 22.

Shander was 2-for-5 with a run scored to headline the Mounties (2-3 overall). Junior Ben Osborne and freshmen Jake Haas and Zach Spray each finished with a hit and a RBI.

The Mountain Lions (3-2 overall) pushed across the game's first run and held a 1-0 lead until Mansfield plated two in the top of the third. Haas led off with a single and later scored when senior Josh Kulina laid down a bunt that was thrown away. Shander scored the second run of the inning on an RBI sacrifice fly.

The Mountain Lions pushed across the equalizer in the bottom of the fourth and struck for two more in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead.

Mansfield immediately answered in their half of the sixth to knot the game back at four. Senior Brady Mengel led off with a walk and senior Dom Lopez doubled. Spray scored Mengel on an RBI single and Lopez came around on a sacrifice fly by Haas.
However, that was the final run for the Mounties and the Mountain Lions scored the game-winning runs on a two-run blast in the bottom of the sixth.

Junior Jake Manke (0-1) was handed the loss, allowing four runs (two earned) in three innings of work. Sophomore Brian Jordan went three innings, allowing two runs while junior Jordan Cowen and freshman Todd Erney both threw a scoreless inning in relief.

Logan Morrison earned the win in relief, allowing one earned run in two innings pitched. Tucker Perry earned his first save, shutting the door in the final inning.

The Mounties wrap up the weekend with another contest against Concord at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 23.
