MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Mansfield University men's basketball team had four players reach double-figures in an 81-74 setback to Millersville University on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 15 in PSAC East action.
Senior
Trevor English notched his ninth double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds on 50 percent (8-of-16) shooting from the field. Junior
Taylor Sweeney (13 points, five rebounds) and sophomore
Jaz Farrell (15 points, three rebounds, two steals) each knocked down three trifectas and juniors
Eli Alvin added 12 points and six rebounds off the bench.
The Mounties (6-18, 5-14 PSAC) outscored the Millersville (13-12, 10-9 PSAC) bench, 29-13 and matched the Marauders in fast break points (10-10). The battle at the foul line doomed the Mounties for the second straight game as Millersville knocked down 21-of-28 shots at the charity stripe compared to a 10-of-16 effort from Mansfield.
Knotted at 41 coming out of the break, Farrell drilled a trifecta to give the Mounties the lead. The ensuing 10 minutes featured six ties and eight lead changes before Millersville started to separate with a 65-58 lead at the 6:59 mark. English netted back-to-back layups to cut the Mountaineer deficit to four with 5:07 to go and minutes later Sweeney and Alvin scored four straight points to cut the deficit to a basket, 70-68.
The Marauders responded with a 9-1 run to extend the lead to 79-69 with 34 seconds remaining and put the game out of reach.
In the first half, Millersville scored the opening points of the contest and never trailed, while bringing their lead up to as much as 12 with 7:19 remaining in the period. Freshman
Richard Oppong ignited the Mountaineers with a trifecta at the 7-minute mark, leading the Mounties on an electrifying 19-6 run over a span of six minutes to take their first lead of the contest. Six different Mounties netted a basket and junior
Garrett Cook scored five of his six points. Millersville drilled a three and Alvin notched another layup to send the game to halftime tied at 41.
For Millersville, James Sullivan netted a game-high 25 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field and 5-of-9 from three.
Mansfield shot well in the first half, knocking down 53 percent of their field goals (16-of-30), including going 6-of-13 from down town.
