Big Second Half Propels West Chester Past Mounties

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Freshmen Jasmine Perez and Jasmine Hilton each scored in double-figures to lead the Mansfield University women's basketball team, but West Chester University used a dominant scoring effort in the second half to earn a 79-52 PSAC East victory on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 1 inside Hollinger Field House.

Perez netted 13 points, dished out three assists and pulled in two rebounds, while Hilton scored 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting to go with three rebounds. Sophomore Sydney Reed added eight points with two trifectas and freshman Alivia Paeglow netted seven points to go with five boards. Freshman Bella Skatell knocked down both of her shots from three, totaling six points.

The Mounties (3-18, 1-14 PSAC) came out of the gate clicking and built an early 8-2 lead thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers from Perez and Reed. West Chester (8-12, 6-9 PSAC) responded with a 6-0 run to knot the game at eight with 6:00 to go in the first. The next six baskets featured six lead changes until Skatell drilled the equalizing 3-pointer to tie the game at 18 with 1:32 to go.

The Golden Rams closed out the first period leading by three and increased their lead to as much as seven with 2:39 remaining in the half. However, the Mounties battled back and cut the lead to three two more times – both off points from Hilton – to head to the break trailing 34-31.

Hot Shooting and three Mountaineer mishaps led the Golden Rams on a 12-2 run to open the third period and extend their lead to 46-33 with just under four minutes remaining. The Mounties were unable to close the gap to single digits the rest of the way and a 22-9 West Chester run to open the fourth put the game out of reach.

West Chester shot 57 percent (10-of-17) from 3-point land and 87 percent (13-of-15) from the foul line.

Leah Johnson and Tacari led four Golden Rams in double-figures with 13 points and five rebounds each.

The Mounties are back on the court on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 5:00 p.m. when Lock Haven University comes to town for a PSAC East contest inside Decker Gymnasium.
