MANSFIELD – The Mansfield University women's basketball team outscored Lock Haven University in the second and fourth quarter, but single-digit scoring in the first and third allowed the Bald Eagles to leave Decker Gymnasium with a 69-50 PSAC East victory on Wednesday night, Feb. 5.
The Mounties (3-19, 1-15 PSAC) best quarter came in the second when they outscored the Bald Eagles (11-10, 7-8 PSAC) 18-13 to trim the deficit to six entering the half. It was the second and third period that ultimately doomed the Mounties, who were held to six and eight points in the quarters on 3-of-16 shooting in each period.
After a 23-8 third period in favor of LHU, the Mounties regrouped for the final stretch, outscoring the Bald Eagles 18-16 and outshooting Lock Haven 44 percent (7-of-16) to 42 percent (5-of-12), but the deficit was insurmountable.
Freshman
Jasmine Hilton missed a double-double by one rebound, finishing with a team-high 19 points and nine rebounds. Fellow freshman
Jasmine Perez filled up the stat sheet with 11 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Junior
Paige Whitfield and
Alivia Paeglow each scored five points, while Whitfield added four assists and Paeglow pulled in five rebounds. Junior
Kira Merritt netted six points and pulled in four boards.
In the first quarter, Lock Haven connected on 3-of-4 3-pointers and held Mansfield to 3-of-16 shooting to jump out to an early 17-6 advantage. Hilton scored the first two baskets for the Mounties, cutting the deficit to 7-4 at the 7:08 mark, but LHU ended the period on a 10-2 run.
The Mounties flipped the script in the second period, erupting for 18 points to trim the LHU lead to 30-24. Mansfield outscored the Bald Eagles, 8-5 over the opening four minutes to cut the lead to single-digits, before LHU extended their lead to double figures once more. Mansfield countered with a 10-5 run, led by trifectas from Perez and Merritt, to close out the half.
Marena Lonardi led the Bald Eagles with a game-high 26 points on 10-of-17 shooting, including a 4-of-5 effort from three.
The Mounties return to Decker Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 8 when Shippensburg University comes to town at 1 p.m.
