WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Freshman
Jaz Farrell scored a team-high 19 points to lead the Mansfield University men's basketball team, but West Chester University benefited from a hot shooting night to leave Hollinger Field House with an 89-58 PSAC East victory on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 1.
Farrell made up the bulk of the Mountaineers' (5-14, 4-11 PSAC) offensive production, while knocking down 4-of-6 shots from three. Seniors
Jahmir Green and
Trevor English and junior
Christian Simmons contributed eight points each with Green adding three assists and three steals.
Neither team found the scoreboard for the opening 2:36, until English gave the Mounties an early 2-0 lead off a layup. However, it would be the final lead of the night as the Golden Rams (15-6, 9-6 PSAC) went on unanswered runs of 13, 10 and eight thanks to 65 percent (19-of-29) shooting from the floor to carry a 49-24 advantage into the break.
The trend continued in the second half with the rams connecting on 46 percent (15-of-33) shots from the field and from 3-point land (5-of-11). The Mounties improved their production across the board in the second half but could not overcome the differential in points off turnovers (39-12) and points in the paint (44-24).
Robbie Heath led four Golden Rams in double-figures with 23 points on an efficient 9-of-12 shooting from the floor. Tim Toro added 18 points and Colin Daly added 16. Â
The Mounties return to Decker Gymnasium on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 7:30 p.m. when they host Lock Haven University in PSAC East action.
