Taylor Sweeney drilled a three, senior
Trevor English drew a charge and the Mansfield University men's basketball team made their final six free throws in the closing minutes of overtime to upend Lock Haven University, 88-84 in front of an energetic Decker Gymnasium crowd on Wednesday night, Feb. 5.
Senior
Jahmir Green gave the Mounties (6-15, 5-11 PSAC) an eight-point lead with just under two minutes remaining in regulation, but the Bald Eagles (9-11, 6-10 PSAC) responded with a 7-0 run to cut the Mountaineer lead to one with 21 seconds to go. Sweeney netted one of two free throws to put Mansfield up by two, but Lock Haven's Nasir Campbell made a driving layup in the closing seconds of regulation to send the game to overtime.
Green opened the scoring in the free period with a pair of free throws but the next three points went the way of Lock Haven to give the Bald Eagles a 76-75 advantage with 3:38 remaining. However, that was the final lead for LHU as English connected on a layup and Sweeney drilled a trifecta to put the Mounties up three, 80-77.
English completed the momentum swing with a charge at the other end and connected on both his foul shots. Juniors
Eli Alvin and
Jonathan Ward each made a pair of free throws as the Mounties went a cool 6-of-6 down the stretch to put the game away.
Sweeney finished with a season-high 20 points, netting 6-of-13 shots including 4-of-8 from deep while pulling in five rebounds. Freshman
Jaz Farrell finished with 16 points and five rebounds, English added 10 points six rebounds and four assists and Green poured in 14 points, pulled in five rebounds and dished out six helpers.
In the first half, the Mounties led by as much as 12 and held the lead for all but 2:44. The team's mirrored each other on the stat sheet, with Mansfield outrebounding Lock Haven 20-19 and each team dishing out seven assists and committing nine turnovers. However, the Mounties shots 50 percent compared to the Bald Eagles 36 percent (12-of-33), while Mansfield's bench outscored Lock Haven's, 15-0.
Christian Kelly finished with a game-high 24 points and Jesse McPherson (17 points, 14 rebounds) and Campbell (15 points, 13 rebounds) each contributed double-doubles to lead the Bald Eagles on the night.
The Mounties host PSAC East leading Shippensburg University on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 8 at 3 p.m. inside Decker Gymnasium.
