MANSFIELD - The Mansfield University women's basketball team is set to host PSAC East foe Bloomsburg University at Decker Gymnasium on Friday, Jan. 3 at 5:30 p.m.
The Mounties (3-8, 1-4 PSAC) have showcased a solid mix of young talent with veteran leadership and are coming into Friday's contest off a 62-59 dramatic win over Clarion.
Freshman
Jasmine Perez and
Jasmine Hilton headline the team's offense with Hilton leading the team with an 11.3 points per game average to go along with 5.5 rebounds per game, while Perez is snatching two steals per contest and grabbing 5.2 rebounds.
Perez has a steal in all 11 games and has multiple steals in four straight games, including three in the win over Clarion.
Junior
Paige Whitfield has really embraced her leadership role and is second on the team with a 10.2 points per game average and is rebounding at a 4.7 per game clip. Whitfield returned to the lineup after an early injury against Clarion to net 10 points and grab five rebounds.
LAST TIME OUT
- Perez drove through the lane and kicked it to an open sophomore Sydney Reed in the corner, who drilled the game-winning 3-pointer to lift the Mansfield University women's basketball team to a 62-59 PSAC victory over Clarion University in the final game of 2019 on Saturday, Dec. 21 inside Decker Gymnasium.
- The Mounties led by as much as 17 midway through the third quarter until Clarion (2-9, 0-5 PSAC) closed the period on a 6-1 run to trim the deficit to 11. Clarion drilled a pair of free throws and a layup to open up the fourth and cut the lead to single-digits with 8:08 remaining. Hilton netted a jumper at the 7:53 mark to extend the Mountie lead back to double-figures for the final time of the game.
- Perez netted 15 points, dished out five helpers and pulled in six rebounds. Hilton scored a game-high 19 points on 9-of-18 shooting while adding four rebounds. Reed scored all nine of her points from behind the arch and Whitfield contributed 10 points, five rebounds, two blocks and a steal.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
- The Huskies were in the midst of a three game winning streak before falling, 70-56 to Gannon University last time out.
- McKenna Hayward led the Huskies with 15 points and five rebounds and Bella Ricci added 11 points while knocking down three trifectas.
- Taylor Montana is leading the team in scoring with an average of 12.6 points per game and Emma Saxton leads the squad with 2.7 assists.
- Huskies' fourth-year head coach is the Mountaineers' all-time leading scoring and also spent four seasons as the Mounties head coach from 2012-2016.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Mounties hit the road on Monday, Jan. 3 at 7:30 p.m. when they travel to Shippensburg University for a PSAC East game.
The Mounties remain on the road when they travel to Lock Haven University on Wednesday, Jan. 8 at 7:30 p.m. for another PSAC East game.
