KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Senior
Trevor English notched his seventh double-double of the season to lead the Mansfield University men's basketball team, but Kutztown University used a hot-shooting night to earn a 77-63 home victory on Wednesday night, Jan. 15.

Kutztown opened the second half on a 13-6 run to extend their lead to the largest of the night, 45-29 with 12:49 remaining. Behind six points each from Green and English, Mansfield outscored the Golden Bears 14-7 over the next five minutes to cut the lead to 50-43 with 8:05 to go. The Mounties remained within single-digits until a pair of Golden Bears' free throws made it 65-53 with 3:56 on the clock.
The Mounties could not crack into the lead from there and the Golden Bears continued to knock down shots on their way to the conference victory.
The Mounties bench continued to play well, outscoring Kutztown's second unit, 29-13. The Mounties plucked away six steals and outscored the Golden Bears, 38-32 in the paint, but Kutztown doubled Mansfield in free throws (14-9) and hit three more 3-pointers (7-4).
Kutztown knocked down their first 3-of-4 3-pointers to build an early 11-2 lead through the opening five minutes. The Golden Bears continued to shoot well from deep, hitting their first 5-of-9 threes to build a 19-10 lead through the opening 10 minutes of the half. However, Alvin hit back-to-back threes upon checking into the game and cut the Mountie deficit to 21-16 with 9:17 to go.
Kutztown ultimately extended their lead back to ten, but another an Alvin three and a turnaround jumper by Ward cut the deficit to 26-21 with 4:44 to go. Kutztown closed out the half on a 6-2 run to head to the break leading 32-23. Alvin led the Mounties with nine points.
Wesley Butler went 10-of-19 from the floor on his way to a game-high 25 points for the Golden Bears. Tarojae Brake knocked down 4-of-9 shots from three, contributing 23 points and seven rebounds.
The Mounties are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 3 p.m. when they travel to East Stroudsburg for a PSAC East matchup.
