MANSFIELD – The History Center on Main Street and the Mansfield Area Chamber of Commerce have teamed up to provide an historic night of baseball memories when they host Mansfield Baseball History/Meet the Mansfield Destroyers Night this coming Wednesday, June 5.

The event will be held at the Museum of Us located at the corner of North Main and West Elmira Streets in downtown Mansfield starting at 7:30 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public with free hot dogs, popcorn and lemonade available.
Â
Fans will get the chance to learn about the 152-year history of baseball in Mansfield from Mansfield baseball historian and History Center Board member Steve McCloskey.

McCloskey, who served as the sports information director at Mansfield University for 29 years prior to retiring in 2017, will tell surprising stories about the dozen Mansfield area players who went on to play in the Major Leagues. Some of the featured Mansfield University baseball players include Carl Lindquist, Joseph Shaute, Mike "Gazook" Gazella, Al Todd, Francis Kelly, and Tom Brookens along with other stars local to the Mansfield area.

Mike "Gazook" Gazella played football, basketball and baseball for Mansfield and graduated in 1918 before going on to play with on the fabled 1927 Yankees World Championship team.

Fans will also have the opportunity to meet and greet members of the new Mansfield Destroyers baseball team that features college baseball players from across the country. A photo and autograph session will be held at the event.

The Mansfield Destroyers are the newest members of the New York Collegiate Baseball League and will open the 2019 season by hosting the Hornell Dodgers on Thursday, June 6 starting at 5:30 p.m. at Joseph Shaute Field on the campus of Mansfield University.
