Early Deficit Sets Mounties Back In Road Contest At ESU

Box Score EAST STROUDSBURG – The Mansfield University women's basketball team faced an early deficit on Saturday afternoon against East Stroudsburg, but despite scoring just one more point than the Mountaineers in the final three quarters of action, the Warriors were able to cruise to a 73-46 win at home.

Tiffany Lapotsky scored 11 of her game game-high 29 points in the first quarter, boosting the Warriors to a 28-2 lead after the first stanza.

Mansfield battled back, outscoring ESU 15-10 behind a seven point second quarter from Erin Gibbons. The sophomore ended the night with a team-high 16 points, her most powerful offensive output since a 16-point performance at Millersville in January. She added four rebounds and three assists.

Besides the first quarter's onslaught, MU was only outscored by one point in the remaining three quarters. The nail in the coffin for Mansfield was the team's season-high 31 turnovers which they committed on the night.

The Warriors shot 47.6% from 3-point range, helping to snap their six-game losing streak. Mansfield outrebounded ESU 39-28.

Noelle Cameron scored nine points to go along with five rebounds. Sophomores Kira Merritt and Paige Whitfield both grabbed four rebounds and combined for six points. Freshman Ellie Thompson tallied nine rebounds and scored six points. Sydney Reed and Lily Soullaird both scored three points, while Alyssa DeNofa dished out an assist and snagged a rebound.

Although Mia Leonard was held to three points, her six rebounds marked her sixteenth consecutive game with at least five rebounds.  The center also tallied another four blocks to give her 58 this season, surpassing Lisa Sherman's mark of 56 blocks in the 1987-88 season for second place on the single-season blocks leaderboard at Mansfield. Deb Gmys holds the single-season school record with 68 blocks in 1988-89. Leonard is now the PSAC leader and 13th in the nation with 2.9 blocks per game.

Brooke Roys added a rebound and a block to her season totals, and Madison Mattas brought down two rebounds.

Mansfield heads to West Chester on Wednesday to face the Golden Rams at 5:30pm in Hollinger Field House.
